Summary:
Abstract – This paper presents a novel
nano-positioning actuator that has a motion resolution
of ±10 nm (limited by encoder resolution) throughout
a range of 3 mm. A new dual-magnet configuration is
introduced to facilitate this electromagnetically driven
actuator to achieve 60 N/A in a compact configuration.
The analytical model of the actuator, i.e., the current-
force-displacement model has been formulated
and then verified experimentally.
In this paper, a new magnetic configuration,
which allows this newly proposed actuator to meet
those requirements, is presented. Others being presented
include: a) a new mathematical model that
accurately predicts the behaviour of the new magnetic
configuration, and b) a complete analytical model of
the flexural support mechanism. Lastly, a prototype is
developed and experiments are conducted to validate
the proposed mathematical and analytical models, and
verify its claimed capabilities.
