pdf fileHistory of Control History of PLC and DCS
The way many industrial processes look today, is the result of many years of research and hard work of people commited to improve their functionality, management, and organization. One could recall the phrase ”necessity is the mother of invention”, and certainly this would fit the everyday work of control engineers and technicians working in industrial processes during the 50’s and 60’s. This necessity was the origin of devices such as the Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and the Distributed Control System (DCS).

pdf fileDesign Projects in a Programmable Logic Controller PLC Course in Electrical
A Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) is a specialized computer used for the control and operation of manufacturing process and machinery. A junior/senior level PLC course in a four-year electrical engineering technology institution mainly covers the following topics: PLC hardware components, developing fundamental PLC wiring diagrams, basics of PLC programming, timers, counters, program control instructions, data manipulation instructions, math instructions, sequencer and shift register instructions, PLC installation, editing and troubleshooting. After the lectures, students practice PLC programming using RSLogix® from Rockwell Automation. Students are able to observe the operation of the program and make necessary modifications as necessary. Towards the end of the semester, students have learned the basic PLC programming instructions. It is a good time to enhance their practical problem solving abilities by working on an extensive design project using PLCs. This paper discusses three separate design projects aided with PLCs to solve practical process and machinery problems in industrial environments.

 pdf filePLC REDUNDANCY
Redundancy comes in many forms and is inherent at some level in any plant design. The most basic form of redundancy requires the inclusion of a hand-off-auto switch for each component. In the automatic mode, the plant or system controller runs the process. In the hand mode this step is bypassed, resulting in continued treatment but a loss of efficiency and/or quality. For example, in an oxidation ditch scenario, the automatic operation may stage aerators based on dissolved oxygen levels. In hand mode it would be best to turn on all the aerators. This would ensure adequate levels of air without having to continuously monitor process conditions. However, it would also waste power.

pdf fileHow to Program a PLC Programmable Logic Controller
Nearly all the industrial equipment that you find in a modern manufacturing facility shares one thing in common - computer control. The most commonly used controller is the PLC, or the Programmable Logic Controller, using a programming language called Ladder Logic. The language was developed to make programming easy for people who already understood how switches, relay contacts and coils work. Its format is similar to the electrical style of drawing known as the Ladder Diagram.

pdf fileIntroduction to ControlNet with ControlLogix Hands On Lab
In this lab you will see ControlNet's determinism in action and learn how to configure and collect data without impacting I/O communications. You'll configure applications and set performance times for time-critical I/O. You will learn to configure the network using off-line tools to improve network performance. Also included is a discussion of redundant media and intrinsically safe systems using ControlNet.

pdf fileAutomation Control Systems PLC Basics
Automation control systems. These control systems are used in manufacturing plants of all types, and some other applications that you may not have considered. The control systems are built around special devices, designed to operate industrial machines, and processes. We call these devices Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and Programmable Automation Controllers (PAC).
