Short Desciption:
The compressibility factor is a ubiquitous concept in measurement. It arises in many industry practices and
standards. Unfortunately the mathematical methods and data associated with it obscure some of the basic ideas
behind it. The purpose of this paper is to provide background and insight into the development of compressibility
factor methods, discuss its development and use in natural gas measurement, provide examples of the behavior
of the compressibility factor over a broad range of conditions, and illustrate the level of uncertainty that
compressibility standards provide.
Summary:
Gas compressibility has a long and important history for the gas industry. Sound speed is also an important
physical property to learn about in terms of its application in gas measurement. This paper illustrates the coupling
between the compressibility and the speed of sound.
Real gas behavior cannot be ignored due to its impact on volumetric and mass flow calculations. The gas
compressibility factor and sound speed are not simple quantities to calculate. The complexity of the AGA Report
No.8 and AGA Report No.10 correlation for the compressibility factor and speed of sound is the price of high
accuracy and reduced uncertainty in gas measurement. Fortunately, computers make the task of computing the
compressibility factor and sound speed trivial for the industry user. A.G.A. Report No.8, and the A.G.A. Report
No. 10 provide comprehensive methods that offer high accuracy and utility to the gas industry. Lastly,
experimental data and analysis are required for high accuracy correlation development and equation of state
performance evaluation.
